How Alice Cooper Influenced Harley Quinn’s ‘Suicide Squad’ Makeup
Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath’s music have provided the soundtrack for great scenes in action movies.
In the case of the James Gunn directed The Suicide Squad, released last summer, rock and roll not only motivated our favorite DC characters to kick butt, but influenced their look as well.
The Suicide Squad makeup artist, Heba Thorisdottir, shared, via Variety, that molding Margot Robbie into Harley Quinn involved inspiration from the Godfather of Shock Rock himself: Alice Cooper.
Harley Quinn’s classic red and black style, paired with Gunn’s directions of a “dirty and gritty” look, gave Thorisdottir the perfect idea.
“I decided she would be Alice Cooper!” said Thorisdottir. “Sexy, at times shocking, and always a badass! And so, the black-lip idea was born. And from there I started experimenting with the red shadow on the eyes as inspired by Alice Cooper, and everything fell into place organically from there.”
We’re positive The Coop would be proud of the villain-turned-hero donning his look. The Suicide Squad isn’t the last time James Gunn and rock and roll would collide. His new HBO Max series, Peacemaker is an offshoot of that film. The show, starring John Cena, has frequently featured ‘80s metal, from famous bands like Motley Crue to lesser known bands like Faster Pussycat and Dogs D’Amour.
