Bicyclist Arrested After Falling 100 Feet Down Rockslide Near Big Sur
A bicyclist was arrested after falling 100 feet down a rockslide near Big Sur in California. Not the best way to recover from a big fall!
Big Sur is a surreal stretch of coast in central California that is stunningly beautiful. You get the big cliffs right off the Pacific Ocean along the Pacific Coast Highway. There is nothing like it in America. However, it’s much more beautiful to look at from a far than it would be to fall down it! Unfortunately, that’s what happened to one bicyclist near Big Sur and it ended in his arrest!

What is considered to be beautiful can also be considered dangerous. They two are not mutually exclusive. Now, this bicyclist is learning that the hard way after falling 100 feet down a rockslide near Big Sur.
According to SF Gate, a 28-year-old bicyclist had to be rescued and airlifted to a hospital after falling more than 100 feet down a cliff face while attempting to illegally traverse a rockslide on Highway 1 just south of Big Sur. It sounds like he was warned about what could potentially happened but he chose not to listen to them. The area has been going through some construction since the slide happened creating some unreliable terrain. SF Gate reports that the biker ignored construction crew’s warning about the rockslide and was told that he’d “probably die” if he attempted to pass through it. However, that didn’t seem to stop him! You’d think the possibility of death would be enough, but evidently not.
It sounds like he fell a short time after disobeying what he was told and ignoring road closure signs (which are both illegal acts in California). SF Gate says that when emergency crews responded to the call they saw a backpack and a bloody arm roughly 100 feet below them. They were able to eventually rescue the man using a helicopter and he was taken to a local hospital to treat his injuries. Now, the unidentified man is reportedly facing at least 2 charges including wanton disregard of failing to obey a person directing traffic and failing to obey traffic signs and signals, per SF Gate.
The Big Sur is one of the most beautiful sights in the USA but you should definitely choose to enjoy it from somewhere safe where you can enjoy the view. Maybe even snap a picture or 2. You can save yourself a lot of trouble and possibly serious injury by listening to people who know what they’re doing.
