Scott Holiday and Jay Buchanan from the Rival Sons were nice enough to swing by the studio on a day off from their tour. They talked about the new albums they’ll be dropping this year. “Darkfighter” comes out on June 2nd, with “Lightbringer” is coming out later in the year.
Jay talks about how this is truly their “pandemic” album. He talked about working remotely with Scott writing the new material. “Dark Fighter is more about fighting the Darkness. With Light Bringer more about illuminating,” he said. Scott added that Darkfighter is a big, epic type song. He told us something about the album that they hadn’t talked about before. “There is no Darkfighter on the album Darkfighter. It opens up Lightbringer.” They expanded on that, and the reason they did it, as well as why why there’s two albums coming out.
We talked about taking the band to the next level. Jay said their career “lives and dies by how honest we can be with our art.” He said the new albums do just that.
What’s it like to put out an album? Simple question, right? But there’s a lot of us that have never, and will never do it. Jay and Scott give me their answer to that simple question. Scott talks about writing songs that they think will transcend on stage in front of a live audience. Jay said, “Whatever songs you write, are going to be your life mantra for the next two years.” He expanded on that to say, “It’s a new narrative that you allow yourself to live.”
Scott talked about the current state of rock music. “People have told us for years that we’re the savior of Rock and Roll.” He eluded that the fans that are really protecting the music form.
There was a few things coming up they couldn’t talk about, but they said their year is full.
