The people in Ferndale pride themselves in being “Good Neighbors”, so they made that the city’s official motto. It’s a very diverse community. Ferndale residents have a fantastic downtown that can be reached in minutes and is filled with cool bars, restaurants, and shops. It’s also affectionately referred to as “Funky Ferndale” and “Fashionable Ferndale.” An overall friendly, creative, laid-back feeling makes downtown Ferndale cooler than the other side of the pillow. Congratulations to Ferndale: this week’s City of The Week with WCSX! Scroll down to check out our Ferndale facts.
A Pinch of Ferndale History
Did you know that people from Ferndale are called “Ferndalians?” Now you know.
Ferndale was first settled after the War of 1812 when people from Detroit moved inland in search of farmland.
Ferndale’s first tavern was a log tavern built by Jabez White in 1821 on what is now 8 Mile Road. The longest-running bars/taverns in Ferndale are all from 1933, coinciding with the end of prohibition.
Ferndale is more than 100 years old. Check out the blog below for some cool, historical pictures.
