Heart Disease is the number one cause of death among men in the United States, but through various lifestyle changes, Heart Disease can be prevented.
In honor of Men’s Health Month, here are five simple ways to improve your heart health.
How many times have you heard or been told the heart is a muscle? Well, muscles love activity! Experts say we should aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day, five days a week. Ease into a workout regime with walking. If you find yourself sitting for most of the workday, try to incorporate standing in your workday. Every little bit counts!
Get a full night’s sleep
Quality sleep is so important to your heart health! In fact, those who sleep on average of seven hours a night have less calcium in their arteries than those who get fewer (and more) hours of sleep.
Okay...quitting smoking isn’t exactly “simple,” but it is one of the most common sense ways to improve your overall heart health. There are so many studies available that show how smoking greatly increases heart disease, not to mention the variety of lung diseases, too! If you are a smoker and need to improve your health, quitting is the best way to start.
Find ways to de-stress
We all lead stressful lives, but it’s so important to find ways to de-stress. There are a ton of meditation apps out on the market that are super helpful, and while baths may not be considered particularly “masculine,” don’t knock the relaxing powers of a good bath until you try it. Just ask Chandler Bing.
Quit drinking your calories!
Soda, alcohol and fancy coffee drinks are fine every so often, but those calories add up fast mostly because of the sugar they contain, which has been linked to an increase in heart disease. As important as it is to watch what you eat, it’s equally as important to watch what you drink, too.
