Michigan Girl, 14, Wins Mackinac Race

Talk about girls who rock. A 14-year-old girl participating in her first Bayview Mackinac Race with her father scored top honors at the race Sunday (July 17).

Merritt Sellers and her father pulled into the Mackinac Island harbor right after 9 p.m. to take the No. 1 standing. The crowd was thrilled to see the favorites cross the finish line.

The competition started for the J/111 sailboat at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (July 16) north of the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron. During the jaunt, Merritt had to sail the boat at night alone as her father rested.

They won and beat out the next team by more than an hour, a boat called “Utah” from Holland, Michigan. Congratulations!
