The Detroit Lions’ 5 Biggest Needs Going Into the NFL Draft
The Detroit Lions are looking good going into the 2024 NFL Draft this weekend. That said, the NFC North is going to be very competitive this season. So, what are the Detroit Lions’ biggest needs going into the NFL Draft?
Detroit Lions’ Biggest Needs Going Into the NFL Draft
The NFL Draft is finally upon us, and the first round will kick off Thursday night (April 25) in downtown Detroit. This year, three quarterbacks are expected to be among the top selections in the opening round. This year’s first round will have 32 picks, and Detroit’s pick is scheduled to come at No. 29. Let’s get into the team’s biggest needs.
1. Extend Jared Goff’s Contract
This has nothing to do with the NFL Draft, but it’s really crucial to the long-term success of the Detroit Lions. They need to extend quarterback Jared Goff’s contract. According to There is no deal “imminent” for Lions QB Jared Goff, despite the fact that WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and OT Penei Sewell now have landed new deals, per source. The Lions and Goff have spoken about a new deal this off-season, but no deal is close at this time.
2. Cornerback
Detroit’s cornerback roster is good, featuring Carlton Davis, Amik Robertson and Emmanuel Moseley. But, Detroit needs more help in this area, especially when looking at the future. Also, those three cornerbacks aren’t signed beyond 2025. So, getting some long-tern cornerback strategy is needed. I think it’s one of their biggest needs this draft.
3. Safety
The Detroit Lions are certainly looking to beef up the safety position. I would guess they’ll add some talent in this area during the draft, even though they also have some good free agent options.
4. Wide receiver
Detroit just locked in Amon-Ra St. Brown for four more years, and they also have stars in Jameson Williams and Donovan Peoples-Jones. But, it wouldn’t hurt to add some talent in this area. As my mom always says, you can never have too many reliable wide receivers. Okay, she has never says that. But still.
5. Edge Defender
Detroit has a good roster here with the great Aidan Hutchinson, as well as support from Josh Paschal, John Cominsky, Marcus Davenport, James Houston and Mathieu Betts. Many don’t think the Lions will do anything on the EDGE front this draft, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen.
