Michigan Residents Are Failing at This Basic Skill
When it comes to education, Michigan has some quality school systems and top-rated colleges and universities, many of which often make year-end best-of lists. But, as it turns out, Michigan residents are failing at a basic skill, according to a new study, and it’s an educational one. What’s more, Michiganders are apparently the worst in the country for this skill.
Preply.com has put together a list of the states with the best and worst rankings in grammar and spelling. “The last time most Americans were quizzed on their grammar skills was in high school. So after several years, do they still remember the basics?” they ask in the study. “In this study, we wanted to see which states rely on tools like autocorrect and which have committed grammar and spelling rules to memory. We surveyed more than 1,800 Americans and tested their knowledge.”
Before we get to our state, let’s look at the best states for grammar and spelling in the U.S. According to the study, California, Connecticut and Georgia were the only states to receive an A on their grammar skills.
Onto Michigan. According to the research, Michigan residents are the worst at grammar in America. I never would have thought Michigan residents would be worst in grammar compared to all the other states. Honestly, I think our schools are great and better than those in many areas of the country. But, those are the numbers, based on Preply.com’s research, so who am I to argue? “Often simple grammatical errors in speech are overlooked, but this isn’t always the case in writing,” they state in the article. “Grammatical errors can even influence others’ perceptions of you.” The state with the No. 1 best grammar score is Connecticut. When it comes to grammar, following Connecticut, California is No. 2 and Washington is No. 3. Find the full list of the U.S. states ranked for grammar and spelling via Preply.com here.
