AAA Issues Michigan Statewide Arctic Air Advisory: What to Know
Metro Detroit has been seeing lows of 10 degrees, with wind chills below zero. Hundreds of schools were closed on Tuesday due to the cold. And now, AAA has issued a statewide Artic Air Advisory.
Temperatures are expected to be in the teens and single digits for the next few days, with wind chills dipping into the negatives. Extremely cold temperatures can “wreak havoc on vehicle functionality,” said AAA.
Artic Air Advisory Tips
To help motorists keep their vehicles road-ready, AAA compiled a list of tips. Regarding batteries, they say to have a charging system tested to ensure it’s fully charged and in good condition. They suggest keeping your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up. With windshield washer fluid and engine coolant, they suggest using one with winter solvent that won’t freeze and a coolant that provides anti-freeze protection down to the lowest temperatures you are likely to encounter. A good guideline is -30 degrees.
Parking is just as important when it comes to your vehicle. Parking in a garage is recommended. If you don’t have access to a garage, then put a tarp over the hood or park in a wind-protected area. To prevent freezing, they said to place a plastic trash bag between the door or the window glass and the frame.
AAA offered additional reminders during the cold weather as calls for dead batteries and other service-related needs across Michigan are expected to jump. In case of emergencies, they suggest traveling with a cell phone and a car charger. AAA recommends that if motorists become stranded, it is best to stay with the vehicle. If the engine can be started, run it only long enough to keep warm. Make sure the exhaust pipe is snow-free.
Additional winter weather driving tips are available in AAA’s How to Go on Ice and Snow booklet, which can be found here.
Enjoy Michigan's Winter Wonderland With These Unique Activities
No matter the time of year, Michigan has loads of cool stuff to do. But there’s something special about when the state turns into a winter wonderland. Just because it gets cold and snowy during winter doesn’t mean you have to hibernate at home. There are plenty of winter activities to enjoy all season long, even after the holiday rush.
Cities all across Michigan have outdoor fun, like skiing, ice skating, and even dining in igloos. Michiganders know how to prep for winter too. Many of us fire up fireplaces, stock up on hot cocoa, and dig out our snow gear in preparation for those winter months.
Winter Blues
The first day of winter marks the beginning of a season filled with holiday celebrations, quality time with friends and family, and cozy comforts. However, the extended cold days and nights can sometimes lead to cabin fever.
As the days get shorter, some folks start feeling a bit down. You might get the winter blues around the holidays or feel a bit of a slump after all the fun and festivities. The National Institutes of Health says that finding fun and engaging activities can help beat those winter blues.
