Well, it’s finally happening. It’s not a surprise, either. Each year, Jim Harbaugh has made it clear in his actions, not always his words, but his actions, that he would love to return to the NFL to coach on the big stage again. It’s happening, according to reports.
Harbaugh has been named head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. The rumors came all week, with one from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, who said it on The Insiders this week. “My understanding is that it’s an extremely strong offer that they have made to him financially,” Garafolo said. “So, this feels like advancing to the point where if everybody’s comfortable with a lot of the principle factors at play, that this team could move on Jim Harbaugh and try to get him under contract here in the near future.” That sounds pretty serious.
Harbaugh has been itching to get back to the NFL for years. If the Chargers made him this generous offer, why stay? It will likely help him get out of some of the NCAA violation mess that he’s in, too, although that remains to be seen. What’s more, other big-named coaches are salivating over the Chargers gig, including former Titans coach Mike Vrabel and former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. So, strike while you can if you want to get back to the NFL, Harbaugh. The Chargers also are on the hunt for a new general manager.
Harbaugh’s brother, John, is keeping busy right now on the road to the Super Bowl. His team, the Ravens, will take on Kansas City this weekend in the AFC Championship. The Detroit Lions are also on their way to the Big Game, as they take on the 49ers this Sunday.
