Dan Campbell Nominated for Coach of the Year, Brad Holmes Wins Exec
This could be Dan Campbell’s year. Last year, many fans wanted to see him crowned NFL Coach of the Year. Now, his name has been finalized as a candidate. He’s not alone, either. Let’s get into the roster of Lions getting recognition this season.
On Thursday, a handful of Detroit Lions coaches and players were named finalists by the NFL for some major awards. Dan Campbell has been named a finalist for head coach of the year. So, who is he up against? Other finalists include John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens, DeMeco Ryans of the Houston Texans, Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers and Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns. Campbell totally deserves it. But, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ryans snag that award, since he’s had such a strong season as a rookie head coach.
In addition, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is a finalist for assistant of the year. He’ll go up against Mike Macdonald of the Baltimore Ravens, Todd Monken of the Baltimore Ravens, Jim Schwartz of the Cleveland Browns and Bobby Slowik of the Houston Texans. As for players, Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and tight end Sam LaPorta are both finalists for offensive rookie of the year. The honors don’t stop there. Lions GM Brad Holmes has officially been named the 2023 NFL Executive of the Year. That’s a huge honor, and I’m so happy to see him get that. I’m worried to see Johnson likely leave Detroit for Washington. But, having Holmes here gives the franchise a consistency that will pull us through it.
The coveted Most Valuable Player of the Year nominees include Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers, Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys and Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers. So, the Lions will be going up against two possible MVPs this weekend. Listen to my podcast, “The Squad with Anne Erickson,” where we discuss the Lions’ chances of beating the 49ers below.
