Detroit is No Longer the Worst City for Traffic in Michigan
Traffic can get pretty crazy in our neck of the woods. So, of course, it’s always a good idea to drive very carefully. Well, as it turns out, Detroit isn’t the worst city for traffic in Michigan anymore. I can’t believe this other city overtook it. I’ve driven in both, and I don’t get it. Let’s delve in.
The new study comes from geolocation technology specialist TomTom, which recently released its annual Traffic Index for 2023. Their ranking highlights the U.S. cities with the worst traffic. As for methodology, they calculated the time, cost, and CO2 emission per mile driven. They also simulated how long it would take to complete a six-mile trip within a given city for E.V., petrol and diesel cars. “Featuring 387 cities across 55 countries on 6 continents, the TomTom Traffic Index evaluates cities around the world by their average travel time, fuel costs, and CO2 emissions, providing free access to high-quality and useful information,” they state in the study. “Whether you’re a driver, pedestrian, city planner, car and policymaker, the index can help you tackle everyday traffic challenges.”
Not surprisingly, New York City is No. 1 on the list of cities in America with the absolutely worst traffic. According to the TomTom report, on average, commuters in New York City spent 24 minutes and 50 seconds driving about six miles in 2023. Other cities with major traffic included Washington at No. 2 and San Francisco at No. 3. Then, Boston is No. 4 and Chicago is No. 5.
So, which Michigan city is now the worst for traffic, even more than Detroit? It’s Grand Rapids, which is No. 55 on the list. In comparison, Detroit is No. 75. I’ve driven extensively in both cities, and in my experience, Detroit is way busier and more congested. But, that’s the study. Going into the top 10 worst cities for traffic in America, the study has Baltimore at No. 6, Seattle at No. 7, Philadelphia at No. 8 and Los Angeles at No. 9. Tampa is No. 30, by the way.
