Cam Newton Responds to Being Cut from the New England Patriots

In an unexpected move, the New England Patriots released quarterback Cam Newton Tuesday (Aug. 31), according to reports from the

The #Patriots gave Cam Newton a $2 million signing bonus and $100,000 workout on the one-year deal they signed him to back in March. His $1.5M base salary was also guaranteed but subject to offsets. No reason financially they couldn't move on and they released him today.

Newton was entering into his second season with the Patriots. He’s a former league MVP and helped the Carolina Panthers get to the Super Bowl in 2015.

Newton took to his Instagram story to respond to the move, as captured by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. “Please don’t feel sorry for me,” he wrote. Read his heartfelt response below.

Newton was chosen to replace longstanding quarterback Tom Brady. Last season, Newton started 15 games for the Patriots. The Patriots wrapped up the season with a 7-9 record, marking their first losing season since 2000.

Mac Jones, a rookie quarterback from Alabama, is now in line to serve as New England’s new starter. During his time at Crimson Tide, Jones led the team to two college football national championships.
