Michigan Road with the Highest Chance to Get You in a Fatal Accident

Michigan has some dangerous roads. But, really, every state has their danger spots. I’m always extra cautious when driving around, because even if the roads aren’t super scary, some of the drivers can be downright crazy. You totally know what I mean. I’ve learned to drive defensively. But, enough about my driving experiences. Here’s the Michigan road with the highest chance to get you in a fatal accident.

MonkeyGeek recently analyzed information from 2018 to 2020 and looked at 1,742 roads in the state. They also looked at more 2,800 fatal accidents that happened. In the study, they point out that drunk driving was involved in 28.5% of fatal accidents between 2018 and 2020. “Drunk driving far outweighs fatal accidents related to distracted driving, speeding and winter weather, making it the most common factor involved in fatal accidents in Michigan,” they state. That’s terrible news. Don’t drink and drive, all. Just don’t do it.

Also, speeding caused 729 fatal accidents in Michigan during the timeframe, accounting for 25.9% of all fatal accidents. That makes speeding the second-leading cause of deadly accidents in the state. Distracted driving contributed to 6.3% of all fatal accidents. That may seem low, but during that timeframe, it caused 179 deadly crashes. Oh, and if you’re wondering the deadliest month for driving, it’s not in the winter, which is surprising. It’s August. My birthday month. “The month of August had the highest number of fatal accidents between 2018 and 2020, accounting for 11.7% of all fatal accidents,” MoneyGeek says. A whopping 331 accidents occurred in August.

So, what’s the Michigan road with the highest chance to get you in a fatal accident? It’s SR-3 Gratiot Avenue from Liberal Street to Van Dyke Avenue in Detroit. During that time frame, it had 16 fatal accidents, 18 fatalities and 3.4 crashed per mile. This distance is 4.7 miles. Stay safe, friends. Find the full report here.

    Battle Creek often appears on these lists of the most violent cities in Michigan. The city is located in a beautiful area of Michigan on the west side of the state, not far from Kalamazoo, but has a few sketchy spots. The city’s “All Violent Crime” number is 614.

    Flint and Flint Township are obviously close together, and both fall next to each other on the list of the most dangerous cities in Michigan and America. The city’s “All Violent Crime” number is 320. If you add that to Flint, you can see why the area is considered somewhere to be careful.

    Jackson has a massive state prison, and the city is often known for them when it’s brought up in conversations across Michigan. I personally really like Jackson and some of its rural areas. The city’s “All Violent Crime” number is 353.

  • 17. Lansing

    I grew up in Lansing and and am surprised to to see it so high on this list. Then again, crime has been on the rise in the city. Lansing is considered the No. 17 most dangerous city in America and third most dangerous in Michigan. The city’s “All Violent Crime” number is 1,757.
