Ozzy Osbourne: “Mama I’m Coming Home”
The Hook: Would you want Sharon to be your mama? We didn’t think so.
Year: 1991 (1992 as a single)
Album: No More Tears
Writers: Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead and Zakk Wylde.
Stats: The song is Ozzy’s only solo Top 40 hit, peaking at number-28 in 1992. (His duet with Lita Ford, “Close My Eyes Forever,” reached the Top 10 in 1988.)
The Background: The mama in Ozzy Osbourne’s “Mama I’m Coming Home” is widely thought to be his wife and manager Sharon Osbourne, who he nicknamed “Mama.” The song is one of four that Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead co-wrote for the No More Tears album.
Tie-In: On this day in 2000 Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife and manager, quits as manager of The Smashing Pumpkins. She says, “I must resign due to medical reasons — Billy Corgan was making me sick!”
Ozzy Osbourne says he gave up drinking and drugs during the recording of the No More Tears album. OC:…just went enough. :33
“Halfway through the making of this No More Tears album, I was drinking again and I was using drugs again. And I woke up one morning and I thought, ‘This is a load of crap, you know. I don’t like this anymore.’ I’d been to so many rehabs. I’d been to so many detoxes. I’d been to so many therapists and sessions with different various people and group meetings and whatnot. It’s a very difficult thing to do. You can’t just say, ‘I’m going to give up smoking now’ and never have a cigarette. It just doesn’t happen that way. But all of sudden, something within me just went, ‘enough.'”
