The Beatles: “She Loves You”
The Hook: Sixth or not, that closing chord stays!
Album: The Beatles’ Second Album (U.S.) It didn’t appear on an album in the U.K. until the 1968 compilation A Collection of Beatles’ Oldies.
Year: 1963
Writers: John Lennon and Paul McCartney
Stats: Not only did it have two separate runs at the top the U.K. charts, it was The Beatles biggest-selling single there, at 1.9 million copies. To date it’s the eighth biggest single in British history. Released in September in the U.S., it flopped at first, but after “I Want to Hold Your Hand” took hold in January, 1964, it began to sell, spending five weeks at number-two behind “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and then replacing it at the top of the charts for two weeks.
Background: Paul McCartney tells the story of how when The Beatles first played the song for their producer, he wanted to eliminate the songs signature closing chord.
Paul McCartney on how The Beatles had to overrule producer George Martin to get that famous final chord into ‘She Loves You.” OC:…or not. :24
“We brought it to George Martin, ‘Hey George,’ and then we did ‘She loves you yeah yeah yeah [sings last chord].’ He said, ‘It’s very corny that end – a sixth.’ He said, ‘It’s like the old days: duh-duh da-duh-duh-duh wah.’ And we didn’t understand. We just said, ‘It’s great, George. Such a great sound.’ He said, ‘It’s a sixth.’ We said, ‘It doesn’t matter. It’s just great’ And we just said, ‘We’ve got to have it.’ We stuck up for that, corny or not.”
