Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”
The Hook: As country a song as Creedence ever did.
Album: Cosmo’s Factory
Year: 1970
Writer: John Fogerty
Stats: Peaked at number-two on the Billboard Hot 100.
Background: Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded a couple of rockabilly covers on their early albums — “Ooby Dooby” by Roy Orbison and “My Baby Left Me,” which was made famous by Elvis Presley. John Fogerty also wrote the country-flavored “Lodi” for the group. But bassist Stu Cook says that with “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” in 1970, they took things to another level.

“We always tried to have at least one good cover of a song by an artist or especially a favorite song of ours. On each album we tried to do that. But whenever possible, y’know, we would try and cop a style and do an original. And ‘Lookin’ Out My Back Door’ was just about as pure country as we did.”
