WCSX Classic Cuts
Don Henley: “Dirty Laundry”
The Hook: It was “pretty freaky” having it covered by the daughter of the artist who made the first rock’n’roll record he ever bought.
Album: I Can’t Stand Still
Year: 1982
Writers: Don Henley and Danny Kortchmar
Stats: His first solo single, it topped Billboard’s Hot Rock Tracks chart and reached number-three on the Hot 100.
Background: “Dirty Laundry” was the song that kicked off Don Henley’s career as a solo artist in 1982. Twenty-three years later, the song, which deals with media sensationalism, was covered by someone who also knows a thing or two about the subject, Elvis Presley’s daughter and Michael Jackson’s ex-wife, Lisa Marie Presley. Henley shared his thoughts on it at the time.
Don Henley on having his classic solo cut “Dirty Laundry” covered by Lisa Marie Presley in 2005. OC:…pretty freaky. :20
”A little strange for me to hear other people doing my songs. But it sort of blows my mind when I think about how much The King meant to me and how his recording of a song called ‘Hound Dog’ was the very first rock’n’roll record that I ever bought when I was just a kid – it was a 45 rpm record. And to think that this many years later his daughter is recording one of my songs is pretty freaky.”
