Stats: “Brown Sugar,” the band’s first release on its own Rolling Stone Records, topped the U.S. charts for two weeks in mid-1971.
The Background: Singer Marsha Hunt was reputedly the subject of, and the inspiration for, this song. In between the recording of “Brown Sugar” at Muscle Shoals in Alabama and its release as a 45, Hunt gave birth to Jagger’s first child, a daughter they named Karis.
