E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren on playing the guitar solo on “Tunnel of Love.”
“I hadn’t heard any of Bruce’s music for quite a while – he was working on his solo record – and when he played ‘Tunnel of Love’ it was just stunning, ’cause in addition to being a brilliant song, it was such a different sound than I was used to from Bruce. When I first heard it, I was like, ‘Well, what chords are those?’ It’s just so different, and I loved it. And he put in all these pedals and started turning dials while I was working on the solo and got a kind of a spacey, flangey sound. Fortunately, it all worked out and it felt good and Bruce used it, which was a big honor for me ’cause he’s a great guitarist and to get to play that solo and have him use it was very cool.”
