Did You Know The Birth Place For Coney Dogs Is Michigan?
The birthplace of Coney Dogs, Michigan, by sheer volume and duration of its Coney restaurants, makes a strong bid. The famous American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit followed Todoroff’s Original Coney Island in Jackson, Michigan, which began in 1914.
The Coney Dogs Myth
It’s a myth that the Coney dog, also called the Coney Island hot dog, originated at Coney Island, New York, where Nathan’s popularized the dog in a bun. Another dispelled myth is that Greek immigrants passing through New York and its famed Coney Island appropriated the Coney Island name for their Coney dog version.
The Detroit Coney Dog War
In 1917, American Coney Island opened on West Lafayette Street in downtown Detroit. A few years later, in 1924, he brought his brother William to Detroit to help. Keros’s brother opened Lafayette Coney Island when space opened up next door. The businesses have operated continuously in the same locations ever since.

The folks from Barstool Sports.” a sports & pop culture blog covering the latest news and social media highlights on their everyday blogs. They call the man at the top “El Presidente,” David Portnoy, famous for his ” One Bite Pizza Challenge.” Grading pizza establishments all around the country.
David took the pizza challenge and did a twist on the concept with the Coney Dog Challenge between American and Layfayette.
Todoroff’s Original Coney Island
The first Coney restaurant in Michigan, Todoroff’s Original Coney Island in Jackson, Michigan, was founded in 1914. Detroit’s American Coney Island opened just a few years later, in 1917, on West Lafayette Street in downtown Detroit. Gust Keros came to Detroit from Greece and started American Coney Island.
