Woodhaven Kids Leave Candy for Hospitalized Neighbor
This story makes me proud to call Michigan our home. Let’s go to Woodhaven where Halloween got a heartwarming plot twist worthy of a movie (or two).
The Woodhaven Candy Story (or how kids ROCK)
Here’s the story in a candy coated nutshell: Amy Schmitt and her son Jacob, usually Halloween rock stars with costumes and candy at the ready, had to sit this one out because Jacob was in the hospital. So Amy (being an awesome mom) left a sign on the door to explain. It said, “Sorry, no candy this year. My son’s in the hospital.” Hey, it happens right? Don’t go anywhere…this gets better.
Instead of freaking out over the empty bowl or egging the house, neighborhood kids read the sign and decided to play Halloween Santa. Amy’s doorbell camera caught the magic in action as kids started leaving candy from their own hard-earned stash (I’ll admit it, got choked up…cutting onions). These kids in Woodhaven are AMAZING. They went through all the walking and door-knocking and just gave it up! MVP award goes to six-year-old Mia, who not only read the sign but did a second trick-or-treat lap just to leave her candy haul on Amy’s porch (Mom and Dad, you’ve raised a very special young lady).
Bottom Line – Woodhaven ROCKS
Cue the warm fuzzies. Amy was floored, calling it an “overwhelming” show of kindness. In a world of ghosts, goblins, and bite-sized Snickers, it’s nice to see these kids in Woodhaven showed us it’s okay to have a big heart.
We say it all the time on the show: No one can help everyone – but everyone can help someone. God bless this neighborhood, Amy and Jacob Schmitt and the great state of Michigan.
