Michigan’s Earthquakes Whole Lotta Shakin Going On
Earthquakes in Michigan are rare, but they do have a history of shaking things up around here.
Four years ago, in the City of Monroe, Michigan, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded roughly two miles off-shore of William C. Sterling State Park. People reported as far as Bowling Green, Ohio, up through Sterling Heights, Michigan, and into Canada.
No real damage was reported, but a few cracks in concrete driveways—still, not something you would expect here in Michigan.
Do We Have A Fault Line Here In Michigan?
In 2015, A geological fault line was discovered in southwest Kalamazoo County following a small earthquake.
For the most part, we in Michigan blame somebody else for our earthquakes. The reason is that the New Madrid fault line is buried underneath several states to the south-southwest of Michigan, extending 120 miles from southeast Missouri into northeastern Arkansas.
But sometimes, a strong quake can be felt by other states like Ohio, with states as far as Louisiana, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and—you guessed it—Michigan able to feel the shaking.
Does Anyone Remember The Earthquake That Occurred at Tiger Stadium?
My Father took me to see the Detroit Tiger great Kirk Gibson on June 10th, 1987. It was the strangest feeling I have ever felt. It was not caused by an undercooked ballpark frank. No, this was my first experience with an Earthquake in Michigan.
Tiger Stadium shook my seat, which was down the third baseline about halfway up in the stands. It shook Tiger Stadium so much that I remember Kirk Gibson smashing into centerfield when it happened.
According to all accounts, just before 8 p.m. that night, the tremor centered on the Illinois/Indiana border and was felt across 15 states.
