The City of Detroit will lengthen its outdoor dining program through the winter, offering locals safe dining options going into the cold months.

The program, called “Open Detroit,” was initiated in June to help restaurants stay open amid coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

Due to the new COVID-19 restrictions on indoor dining, Detroit has moved to lengthen the program from Dec. 1 through April 1, 2021.

“Our local restaurants continue to face challenges as a result of COVID-19 related restrictions on sit-down dining capacity,” DPW Director Ron Brundidge said in a statement. “With these restrictions continuing into the cold weather months, the extension of the Open Detroit program will give businesses an opportunity to service patrons in a safe manner. Our hope is that restaurants take advantage of this opportunity, and most importantly that residents safely support these businesses.”

Under the program, sidewalks, on-street parking spots and private parking lots will be allowed to be converted into outdoor dining areas with seating.

Permits for the summer outdoor dining program will expire on Nov. 30, but restaurants are able to apply for the winter program online at Detroitmeansbusiness.org.
