David Lee Roth Releases Marvin Gaye Classic Cover
The Master Blaster None Talk Faster Diamond David Lee Roth Releases Marvin Gaye’s Classic Cover from 1965, “Ain’t That Peculiar” and the crowd goes wild. Back in 2003, DLR went to the recording studio where all the magic happened in the early days of Van Halen: the Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, California. In that session, Dave recorded a cover album called, Diamond Dave. 14 Covers included songs from artists like Steve Miller Band, The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Hombres, and more. It was all over the place musically. That’s DLR, he always keeps people guessing.
The song David Lee Roth just released, “Ain’t That Peculiar.” was written by Smokey Robinson and later presented to Marvin Gaye to record. The song went to #1 on the R&B charts and #8 on the Hot 100 Billboard chart.
David Lee Roth always loves R&B songs and can take any song and make it his own. Like David’s version of, “California Girls,” from the Beach Boys. Covers that date back to the Van Halen days with, The Kinks, “You Really Got Me.” Seems David Lee Roth is having a ball releasing some from the vaults. Recently re-dos of some Van Halen Classics, “Unchained” & “Dance the Night Away.” David also did country versions of Van Halen tunes like, “Jump” and “Jamie’s Crying.”
This song, I think, is for the fans and to keep DLR in the music scene teaching the younger generation and maybe Dave still has something to prove… no idea what, but Dave’s not here, man. I love this version of “Ain’t That Peculiar.” His voice still has some power and style to it. It sounds like he was having fun in the studio.
