McBroken App: Solve the Mystery of the Broken McDonald’s Shake Machine
Why is the McDonald’s shake machine always broken when you crave that triple-thick shake and wait in the drive-thru lane? You get up to the call speaker and ask for a milkshake, only to be told the shake machine is down. Frustration sets in as you wait in line, only to be disappointed. That goes the same if you are in the mood for a McFlurry treat at McDonald’s.
There’s An App For That
Why does it seem that the Machines always seem to be down or are in the process of getting cleaned? Several conspiracy theories have been floated, but the mystery may never be solved. Luckily for Shake fans, there is an app called McBroken.
A good friend told me about a great app that helps him save time to get refreshment and joy. McBroken is an app that lets you know, in real-time, whether the Shake machine at the McDonald’s near you is working or is out of order. McBroken was created by software engineer Rashiq Zahid.
How Does The App Work?
The app lets you know when a shake machine is down in real-time. It uses reverse engineering on the McDonald’s app to currently place an order worth $18,752 every minute at every McDonald’s in the United States to figure out which locations have a broken ice cream machine. It’s pretty genius if you ask me. Rashiq Zahid even posted on Twitter X all about what he was doing.

Why Are The Shake Machines Always Down?
Finding the actual reason is one of life’s unanswered questions that has you down a rabbit hole. One story in the Wall Street Journal is the reason most, given it takes nearly four hours to clean and sanitize, and this process must be done daily. The other reason I found was alleged inter-politics with techs hired to clean the machines. Some of the stories over the years have lawsuits tied to them. Check out a conspiracy complement of the site called WIRED.com here for a complete reason: clicking this page.
My Quest For A Late-night Shake
For giggles, I tested the McBroken App while creating this story. A local fast food place is near the house. My luck getting a shake after 9 p.m. was always slim to none. Surprisingly, the app was correct; this report got a large shake at press time. Now, the price of the shake is another story for another day. The McBroken app worked, and I ended my weekend with a smile.
P.S. I do miss the Artic Orange Shakes.
