Remember When John Sinclair Got Arrested?
Sinclair was arrested on January 24, 1967, and charged with the unlawful sale and unlawful possession of two marijuana cigarettes. Sinclair was given ten years in prison. The sentence was questioned by many as unduly harsh, and it galvanized a noisy protest movement led by prominent figures of the 1960s that included ex-Beatle John Lennon, who traveled to Ann Arbor to lend support to the powerful “Free John Now” movement that ultimately succeeded in springing Sinclair from behind bars. Sinclair was freed in December 1971.

My Brush With John Sinclair At The Motor City Muscle Concerts Downtown
Saturday, August 18th My local band CHIT! got to play this amazing festival, Motor City Muscle. Two of the most iconic, global cultural contributions from Detroit and America – rock-n-roll and muscle cars – together as one definitive celebration. After my band’s gig, I wandered around by the Hart Plaza fountain looking for where Wayne Kramer was supposed to jam with Don Was. To my amazement sitting by himself on a large block of concrete sat John Sinclair himself deep in thought. I introduced myself and had a brief conversation. John got a laugh at my band name, “Chit!.” and after a friendly handshake wished him well.
