Myth Or Fact: Should You Wait To Swim After Eating?
Remember the Myth Or Fact as a child, your mother’s stern warning about not going into the water after you eat? The rule of thumb was 30 minutes, or you would sink to the bottom. Myth Or Fact would scare you more than a scary movie you covered your eyes to.
The common belief that the blood going to your digestive tract after eating steals the blood needed to keep your arms and legs pumping during swimming is unfounded. Your biggest danger related to eating and swimming is probably a minor cramp, or you would puke in your friend’s pool.
Where Did This Myth Come From?
Thanks to a local friend who is an Eagle Scout, I learned about the Myth Or Fact as far back as 1908. It was brought to my attention as part of the Scouts of America’s Handbook.
The handbook warned that if boys didn’t wait at least 90 minutes before swimming, they might drown — “it will be your fault.” Where the Boy Scout handbook got the idea isn’t known, but it certainly wasn’t accurate. No sources were cited, and no explanations were offered. We also don’t know how 90 minutes got negotiated down to 30—probably swimming class instructors.
Eating 30 Minutes Before Has Benefits
There’s no real reason to avoid swimming after eating. Eating a couple of hours before you swim can give you more energy to stay afloat. Drinking is more important than what you eat. According to Dignity.org, states As with exercise, it’s good to drink water when you swim so you don’t get dehydrated.
Back In 1975, Everyone Stayed Out Of The Water That Summer
The school was officially out for the summer. Friends in the neighborhood got on our bikes and peddled a few miles to a brand new movie theater complex, the Showcase Cinema, with five theaters in one place.
15 Mile and Van Dyke in Sterling Heights was in June of 1975, showing the Summer blockbuster movie, ” JAWS.” After watching this on the big screen, my friends and I hardly used the swimming pool. And you didn’t even think about swimming in any Lake in Michigan that Summer.
