POLL: Favorite Full Moon Fever Track?
Tom Petty‘s first solo album, Full Moon Fever, was released 29 years ago today (April 24).
Tom Petty felt it was clear the songs didn’t belong on a Heartbreakers‘ album and decided to go solo and make the record. Although the album was said to be a solo work, it was hardly that. In fact, Heartbreaker, Mike Campbell, played on the record and Jeff Lynne helped Tom Petty in writing many of the album’s hits.
When the album was finished, Tom Petty’s record company at the time did not want to release it because they felt the album was “inconsistent” with his image – even as a solo artist. Eventually, they changed their tune and Full Moon Fever became Tom Petty’s most successful album – with five singles – including “Free Fallin’.”
Tom Petty said during an interview, “‘Free Fallin’ is a very good song. Maybe it would be one of my favorites if it hadn’t become this huge anthem. But I’m grateful that people like it.”
