The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough! And It’s Cyndi Lauper’s Birthday!
Other than Madonna, what female artist embodied the 80s more than Cyndi Lauper? I would say Cyndi was everything cool and awesome about the 80s. The perfect 80s pop sound wrapped in 80s designs hanging with the coolest 80s people. Madonna’s age demographic was similar but not exactly like Cyndi’s. Madonna was hanging with and dating big-name stars while Cyndi was hanging with Captain Lou Albano and Rowdy Roddy Piper. And it’s Cyndi Lauper’s Birthday today! She’s turning 70!
While wholly ignorant of most music at a young age, movies, and tv provided me with the only music I really knew. So, of course, I immediately enjoyed Cyndi’s “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” track in the 1985 Spielberg classic Goonies.
Cyndi even makes a guest appearance singing the song as she appears on the tv prior to the main characters just starting their adventure to find One-Eyed Willy’s treasure.
Are the Goonies Good Enough?
According to Songfacts.com, if you listen there is no mention of Goonies in the lyrics, but gets crammed in the background and in the title. Mostly to appeal to the big film execs.
The music video is great! It was released in two parts. Part one was released before the film and the second part after. The music video features numerous legendary WWF (now WWE) wrestlers like Captain Lou Albano, Rowdy Roddy Piper, The Iron Shiek, and Andre the Giant. The “plot” plays out as Cyndi in a similar adventure as the Goonies themselves with the various wrestlers dressed as pirates. Everything about it is pure 80s.
Even though many fans absolutely love this song, Cyndi has hated it for many years and stopped playing it live in 1987. She would bring it back to her setlist after so many fans asked for it.
