Stevie Nicks Backup Singer Catfished For A Million Dollars

We've all been aware of catfishing for some time now.  MTV's show Catfish, began airing in 2012. But just because we know about it, doesn't mean it doesn't still happen. Never send money to people you haven't met in person.  I checked out the Federal Trade Commission's website (ftc.gov) and found that an insane amount of complaints are filed yearly. Last year alone, more than 64,000 romance scam complaints were received. In 2023 more than one billion dollars were taken in romance scams. The FTC website says that the average amount scammed from romance catfishing is $2,000.  Liza Likins was catfished for more than a million dollars over a two-and-a-half-year period.

Liza's career reaches back to the '60s.  She made her first album in 1968 before becoming a backup singer for numerous singers including Stevie Nicks. Liza and Stevie have been friends since the '80s. Liza talks about her relationship with Stevie and what it was like to tour with her in an interview on fleetwoodmacnews.com. Several sources also state that Liza and Stevie were roommates for years and that Stevie was maid of honor in Liza's first wedding.

USA Today spoke with Liza who said, "It is definitely an embarrassing and humiliating experience to be deceived." Liza said she wants to help educate others so the same thing doesn't happen to them. Liza was on the show "Social Catfish" on YouTube and talked about what happened to her.

Liza lost her husband back in 2020.  She was devastated and isolated herself.  Friends encouraged her to meet people. After she switched her status to "widowed" on Facebook, she began getting messages from men.  One of them called themselves "Donald" and he looked like Liza's husband.  The relationship with Donald went on for more than two years.

The FTC has a great list of tips to avoid getting romance scammed. One of the best tips is reverse-search images.  Does the person's picture match up to their name? Obviously, do not send personal pictures to an online person.  The FBI has warned (repeatedly) that scammers will use the sensitive pictures for extortion. The FTC also has a great list of the top things romance scammers will lead with. #1 is the person or someone close to them in sick, in jail, or hurt.
