Canton is known for shopping today, but back 50 years ago, Canton was known as the “Sweet Corn Capitol of Michigan.” Canton still has a thriving Farmers Market every Sunday between May and October.

Canton, like Nankin and Peking townships, was named after places in China. Canton is the only remaining local community with its original Chinese name.

Canton was named in honor of the port and provincial capital known historically as Canton, Imperial China, known today from the pinyin standard as Guangzhou.

Canton Township is also consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States, as well as in the state of Michigan. In 2015, the township was ranked as the 29th safest city in the U.S.
