Singing The Praises Of Seger
I was thinking about our Block Party Weekend and someone in the hallway asked me “which block are you looking forward to?” – to no one’s surprise I said “Bob Seger” at the top of my voice.
There’s a certain connection with Bob Seger and Michigan that’s hard to explain – you can feel it when we talk about it. The calls and texts during “Seger De Mayo”, people sending pictures in from his concerts, memories of Pine Knob, Cobo, Joe Louis, The Palace…you name it and Bob Seger has made an impact on this state.
Not only is Bob Seger’s music powerful – but it really does reflect the values and vibe of Detroit. Is there a better song to play on the patio grilling burgers or chilling on a boat than “Roll Me Away”. A perfect anthem to get away from work and be in the moment (even if you do wind up at a bar twelve hours outside of Mackinac City…it’s the NorthStar Bar in Rochester, Minnesota BTW).
Who doesn’t tape their toes when you hear “Feel Like A Number” – Bob’s voice echoing the blue collar, “we work hard and proud of it” mindset that built the Motor City.
It’s fun to explain to my friends around the country the deep connection we have with his music. Bob Seger is the Mayor of Michigan. We dance to his music at weddings, we play his tunes at birthday parties and memorials. Seger is that guiding voice in our car when we’re driving up north. Bob inspires us to celebrate our lives and sing along (even if we’ve never been to Fire Lake). Seger lifts my spirits after a long day and calms me down when I’m worried about stuff that doesn’t matter (Til It Shines is my jam for times like that).
A block of Bob Seger on a Block Party Memorial Day weekend here at 94.7 WCSX? Hell yeah.
