Has The Waste Management Gotten Out Of Hand?
Of course, the weekend was about the Super Bowl, but for golf fans it was one of the greatest weekends on the calendar. The Waste Management Phoenix Open has become known as “The people’s Open”, but has it gotten out of hand? The is the question I have been asking fellow golf fans all weekend. Here are a few of my thoughts and a recap of what went down this weekend.
The WM has become the golf tournament of the year. With it’s stadium seating on hole number 16 and it unbelievable party atmosphere, it truly is a one of a kind event. But, has it gotten out of control? This weekend we had a countless number of reason why they need to pump the breaks a little on this tournament. At least in the eyes of many golf fans. For example, we had countless, player and spectator interactions. From Zach Johnson telling everyone to shut up, to Jordan Spieth telling the crowd to F-Off. The PGA seems to have allowed the fans to take over the tournament, and with the emergence of LIV, I don’t think it will change.
First, here was the exchange between Zach Johnson and a few fans:

MY THOUGHTS:
It was clear that the players had enough by weekends end. Fans always get out of control at this event, but the fact that they had to play multiple rounds a day due to weather. On Saturday, they had to suspend alcohol sales because things were getting so out of hand. Here is my question though. Can the PGA really push back and try to tame this tournament next year? My personal thought it no. I think they have created this monster and now have to live with it, especially with LIV doing what they are doing.
It seems like the players are done with it though. I really think the players loved this event, but now seem to be turning on it. Here are a few more videos of the craziness that took place in AZ this weekend.

Finally, when it comes down to it, I don’ think the tour can do much more than ask for people to calm down next year. They created this monster and now have to stick with it. At least if they want to keep the fans happy. The worst possible thing you could do right now is piss off PGA Tour fans. We will talk about this and so much more on The Ball Washer Podcast.
