No one can replace Freddie Mercury. Freddie was a one-of-a-kind rockstar. I recently read an EPIC Brian May quote on Freddie Mercury and Queen fans. Brian May says Queen has attempted to record songs with Adam Lambert, but May feels there's a certain part of the Queen fans that just won't have it. In my opinion, he's not wrong. It's not a slam on Adam Lambert. Lambert has an amazing voice and range. I think he's done the best anyone could do to fill Freddie's shoes at live shows. As a huge fan of Queen, if I saw an album coming out with anyone other than Freddie, I would be skeptical. It's not JUST Freddie's singing, but also his songwriting. So many of Queen's songs written by Freddie were relatable and personal.
Epic Brian May Quote on Freddie Mercury and Queen Fans
Brian May tells Total Guitar, "It just never quite reached the place where we felt it was going to be right. So we haven't pursued it so far. That's all I can tell you. So I really don't know... But I think there's a bit of a barrier there. I think if people see Queen on a record label, they still want it to be Freddie [Mercury] singing. It could be Jesus Christ on it, but they'd still want Freddie, and I don't blame people for that."
Again, in my opinion, Brian May isn't wrong. It doesn't matter who sings, if it's not Freddie, it's not Queen. Certainly, other bands have been able to weather changes in lead singers, but usually, it's earlier in their career. If it is later in their career, they tour, but new music is not a part of the package. It's one thing to perform songs that have already been established by the band. It's something completely different to create new music that lines with the band's style and is accepted by the established fan base.
Paul Stanley Lists Who He Thinks Are the Best Lead Singers of All Time
Paul Stanley is a rather open book on social media and decided to share who he thinks are the best lead singers of all time.
He wrote via Twitter, "The best lead singers of all time? How about 11 off the top of my head..."
The man also known as Starchild then rattled off a very interesting list of great singers. Whether they're ranked or not isn't really known, but it's always interesting to find out where rock icons stand on highly debated topics like this.
Stanley's list is as follows:
1. Robert Plant
2. Steve Marriott
3. Freddie Mercury
4. David Ruffin
5. Rod Stewart
6. Paul Rodgers
7. Janis Joplin
8. Steve Perry
9. Brad Delp
10. Brian Johnson
11. Lou Gramm
12. Ann Wilson
Here's Stanley's exact tweet.
(Note: Stanley lists two singers at number ten, but he doesn't clarify whether that means it's a tie.)
