The Fight To Save The Band Shell

In the effort to save a piece of Detroit music history a petition circulated to save the bandshell from the old State Fairgrounds. The structure was originally on the chopping block for demolition when the city sold the site to Amazon for a massive distribution center. A group called, "People for Palmer Park stepped up with the Detroit City Council in 2021 to save the band shell was dismantled and put in storage.

Good News Finally Arrives For A New Home

People For Palmer Park announced that the bandshell will be restored and rehomed in Palmer Park.
Hopefully, as soon as the Summer of 2024, the bandshell will be located in the northwest portion of Palmer Park off 7 Mile Rd. The bandshell's second life is unlikely to include loud music or rock and roll concerts; but rather community-focused family events like opera, plays, or even movie nights in the park. Let's hope the city keeps an open mind.

The  Bandshell Was Home To Music Legends

The wooden bandshell was home to Detroit music legends and acts from all over. The first official Michigan State Fair was held in 1849, which is claimed by the state of Michigan to be the oldest state fair in the United States. It received its permanent home in 1905 at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit.  According to the Band Shell Data Base quite a wide variety of musical acts played at the bandshell.
