It’s always interesting to learn something new about The Sopranos – one of the greatest series in TV history. For example, did you know Steven Van Zandt was supposed to play Tony?
“…It was one of those weird things. (Chase) wanted unusual, new faces and he really thought I could do it, and out of pure ignorance naiveté I thought I could do it. Luckily HBO wouldn’t let him (chuckles) so we ended up with one of the greatest actors of all time, Jimmy G (Gandolfini). Van Zandt continued, “(Chase) still wanted me in the show and I actually said to David, ‘Listen, I’m feeling pretty guilty about taking an actor’s job here,’ and he said, ‘OK, in that case, I’ll write you in a part that doesn’t exist,’ and (Silvio Dante) was born.”
Back to our conversation with Michael – we also talked about the song “Don’t Stop Believin” from Journey and how he feels when he hears it. It’s an amazing story about the first time they saw the final episode and what he feels when that song comes on the radio.
It’s interesting that my 20 year old son has discovered the Sopranos (he sat by me watching the interview). The Sopranos is a show that will still feel fresh fifty years from now. And that’s in no small part due to the amazing acting from people like Michael Imperioli…and yes, a Sopranos star got mobster advice.
