AC/DC “Back In Black” – “A Celebration”
AC/DC “Back In Black” is one of the most impactful of their songs. A tribute to AC/DC’s lead singer, it was released just five months after Bon Scott died from acute alcohol poisoning. For most bands this kind of event is disastrous… and it was. The loss of Bon Scott was felt by the band members and legions of fans.
Released less than a year before Bon’s death, Highway To Hell was the album that put AC/DC on a higher level than ever before. With Bon’s passing, all eyes were on the Young brothers. What would be the next phase for AC/DC?
What Kept The Band Together
One of the biggest forces that kept the band together and moving forward: Bon Scott’s parents. Brian Johnson talks about it in a Forbes interview. Bon’s parents thought that the band staying together would give the band distraction and purpose as they dealt with their grief. They felt it was what Bon would want.
Did AC/DC Record Back In Black Before Bon Scott’s Death?
That’s the question. Conspiracy theories have existed for decades. We all heard the rumors that Bon Scott wrote Back In Black or that there were secret recordings but both Angus Young and Brian Johnson have said in numerous interviews that that is not the case.
All of Bon’s notebooks of lyrics were given to Bon’s family, according to Angus.
This video was uploaded to YouTube back in 2008:
Most of the comments say they don’t think it’s Bon. Others ask to respect his memory. In my opinion, this audio is not Bon Scott, but I wanted to share it to show just how much of a conspiracy theory mentality exists 30 years after Bon’s passing. I asked on the WCSX Facebook page if people thought Bon Scott songs existed and the majority of the answers were “Yes.”
Angus Speaks About The Rumors
Talking to Paste, Angus speaks about Bon working with Angus and Malcolm on a couple of songs: “Hells Bells” and “Have a Drink On Me.” Angus also says that Bon never got a chance to record anything. Angus said, “He’d been working on some lyrics, and said, ‘We’ll hook up next week and maybe the three of us can just start going through stuff.’ But unfortunately, he passed before that.”
It would be difficult to have grounds that Bon Scott recorded or wrote an album that was a tribute to himself before he passed. Bon did have song ideas that he left behind. However, the band decided to let those go and let Brian Johnson take the lyrical wheel.
AC/DC Back In Black: Honoring Bon Scott
Forget the hearse, ’cause I never die
I got nine lives, cat’s eyes
Abusing every one of them and running wild
“Back In Black” is more than just the title track. It’s one of the coolest tributes to a fallen comrade anyone could possibly hope to have. Brian Johnson said in the book, AC/DC: High-Voltage Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Ultimate Illustrated History, “The boys told me, ‘It can’t be morbid and it can’t be about mourning. It has to be for Bon and it has to be a celebration.’ I just wrote whatever came into my head.”
AC/DC “Back In Black”
Brian’s lyrics and delivery were definitely on point with AC/DC fans. Released on July 25th, 1980 The album’s title track was their first release. Back In Black went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. Recorded in the Bahamas in just six weeks, the album was released 5 months after Bon Scott’s death.
