Rory Mcllroy’s “Champions League” Idea
The sage between the PGA tour and Liv golf still holds strong as we wait on their decision to either join together to create one power league, or stay separated and compete against each other. One guy that now seems to be playing both sides is Rory Mcllory. Just weeks after changing his tune on the Liv league, he now has an idea of what golf’s future should and could look like. I am honestly a little split when it comes to his plans, but let dive into it and see what you think.
So, now Rory is talking about a Champions style golf league, in an interview earlier in the week, Rory mentioned his ideal golf world. This including a Champions league for golf. What this means is, you would have a top tour with the top 70 to 80 players. Outside of that, there would be smaller “minor” leagues that feed into the main tour. In the interview he compared it to European football and how they have a tier system of leagues. So, basically it would work how Liv is conducting themselves right now. The bottom few players on the “Champions tour” would get relegated to a smaller tour, while the top players from those smaller tours could make there way up into the main one.
FIRST THOUGHTS:
When I first read this, I thought to myself, he knows something that we all don’t. Obviously the game of golf is a global one, with many smaller tours around the world besides the PGA. But here is the thing, Liv is already doing it by relegating players after each season. The only difference, is right now there is no real “minors” for Liv. Guys who get sent down, have to try to qualify again. Or, go play on tours like the Asian tour or Canadian tour to make it back.
One of the problems with this plan is that most of golf right now is so fractured. You have guys who are still against the Liv League. Will the deal between them and the PGA change anything.? My guess is yes, these players are going to do whatever it takes to keep making the money they do. Also, there is a part of me that loves this idea from Rory, besides the NFL every other league has a feeder league. Now, the one downfall is you would get rid of Qschool. As a former caddy for a guy who went to Qschool, I would miss that side of the game.
Right, now there are a lot of mini tours out there, none of which give you a chance of making it on the PGA tour. Also, would this take away the Monday qualifiers? Another part of the game I love, giving a guy an outside chance to play in a big tournament any given week.
Here are some more thoughts from Rory on the future of golf:
FINAL THOUGHTS:
When it comes down to it, I think golf fans are just going to have to accept the fact the professional golf is going to look much different in the future. Honestly, you have to credit Liv. When they first started no one thought they would make it, not only have they made it, Liv seems to be here for the long haul.
