420-friendly Music Venue To Open In Michigan This Year
Marijuana is legal for recreational use in Michigan and now a 420-friendly music venue is set to open in the state.
The organizers of Michigan’s Cannabash music festival has a plan to open what they’re saying is the first “420 friendly” music venue in the state. It will offer both alcohol and cannabis sales and consumption. Grams & Jams Productions co-founder Connie Maxim-Sparrow told us that concert attendees have been either smoking weed or drinking alcohol at concerts for years. She pointed out that it’s what people want.
“Cannabis is tired of being thrown in the corner. Cannabis deserves its own space,” said Grams & Jams Productions co-founder.
Grams & Jams Productions is gearing up to open the Field of Green, an outdoor concert venue in Baldwin this spring. For Field of Greens, they partnered with Baldwin Provisions, a cannabis dispensary that is located on 30 acres. Maxin-Sparrow shared how the space is close to the Idlewild, which is a historic African American vacation destination.
“It was an old gun range and driving range at one point,” Maxim-Sparrow told us. “It’s wide open, with power, lights, and everything because it was being operated as a driving range and a shooting range many years ago. It’s already all fenced in.” She also mentioned that they plan to add more power throughout the space for their musical acts and vendors.
As far as the town of Baldwin is concerned, their government was open to having the space used as a venue that allows cannabis. Baldwin is about an hour north of Grand Rapids.
The Pressing Question: How Will This Work?
Liquor license regulations prevent marijuana and alcohol from being sold and consumed in the same place. The Grams & Jams Productions co-founder said they will be dividing the venue in half with a fence. It will have alcohol on one side of the fence and weed on the other. This also means that the venue will be 21 and up.
They’re hoping to have the venue finalized by May with a venue that can hold up to 15,000 people. Maxim-Sparrow said they are planning to have a spring and summer season of festivals to kick off the space, with “an appeal to a range of demographics and music tastes.”
The company is also seeking potential sponsors for their venue space.
Michigan’s Cannabis Background
The Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act was passed by Michigan voters in November 2018. It allows anyone 21 or older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. Additonally, to grow as many as 12 plants at home. According to MichiganCannabis.org, the state has over a thousand Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA)-licensed, with about 330 active medical marijuana dispensary locations. Also, over 660 active recreational cannabis dispensary shops.
