Steve Yzerman Scores The Most Memorable Goals In Red Wings History
On May 16, 1996, The Captian, Steve Yzerman gave Detroit City a goal that has now become one of the most famous shots in Red Wings History.
A Feeling You Will Never Forget
Hockey fans outside of Detroit still debate that the shot from the Blue Line was a “Lucky,” shot. But St.Louis Blues goalie Jon Casey still wishes he could have that one back to this day.
For me lucky enough to get a playoff ticket for the game, I still remember the ear-ringing ting of the puck hitting the crossbar and going in the net. The crowd then really exploded in cheers.
The Goal Was So Much More For The City Of Detroit
For the Red Wings and the City, it was more than just about the quality of the goal, it was the pressure of potentially blowing a heavily favored series after going down 3-2 and not only guaranteeing a win on the road in game 6 but delivering their ticket into the next round with a blast off his stick in double overtime of game 7.
One Of The Great Sports Calls In Red Wings History
“That’s it, there it is! Oh my… 60 footer! Bingo! Oh Baby! Oh My!”, “Steve Yzerman wins it with a bullet!” “60-foot slap shot by the captain! And the Red Wings are going to the conference final!”

Never Will Forget The Feeling Of That Night
I got a call from a friend that he had a ticket to the playoff game. Normally I would pass because my job at the time was doing mornings here in Detroit at the radio station Z-Rock. My days would start around 3 am getting ready for my show that started at 5:30 am.
With the game going into the 2nd overtime, I admit that I knew I would be tired for the next day, ( which now was tomorrow). I remember yelling out, “Hey Wings, someone score cuz I gotta go to work soon.” Not more than a few seconds later. The Clink off the crossbar and we all went wild! Time just stopped and froze. Nothing mattered but yelling your head off, “We did it! We Won!
