My Favorite Jeff Beck Album- Screamin Scott
One incredible album was 1975’s Jeff Beck’s, “Blow by Blow,” album. A childhood friend got me to sit in his basement, complete with black light posters and the smell of incense. What I listened to was by far a great guitar god. I was introduced to a whole world of music I had no idea was out there.
I knew Jeff’s work with Jimmy Page in the Yardbirds, but not much as a solo artist. I never heard of Jazz Fusion. Jeff’s guitar smokes on, “Freeway Jam”. Smooth sounds on the song, “Diamond Dust”. If I ever heard a 5-star album, this has to be ranked up with the guitar greats. My vinyl album is pretty worn, especially on the orange Epic Label on the album. I will have to visit one of my local, mom-and-pop, independent record stores to pick up a nice clean copy. This is an album you listen to with headphones on to paint the full picture of Jeff Beck.
Jeff in his early days played the famous, “Grande Ballroom in Detroit. I was too young to attend any shows there in 1968. But in 1995 got to see him with Carlo Santana at Pine Knob. Still have the concert stub I stuck in one of my albums.
Other albums I suggest to give a listen to would be Jeff’s 1969 release, Beck-Ola, Wired from 1976, and Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop from 1989.
I was on the radio on WCSX in the afternoon of 1/11/2023 when one of my former co-worker Meltdown stopped in to tell me the news on Jeff’s passing. To honor Jeff I let the audience know of the details of his passing and at the suggestion played Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page’s Yardbird classic, “I’m a Man.”
We lost one of the great guitar legends of our time
