Beloved Ferndale Restaurant Gets Great News
If you’ve ever been cruising along Woodward Avenue in Ferndale and noticed a little green building with the name “The Fly Trap” on it – did you stop in? It’s a legend for their great breakfasts (like green eggs and ham, plus their salmon burger, fresh jam and much more). And it was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (really!) – check out the salmon burger here:
But did you know we almost lost it back in 2022?
The original owners shut it down due to staffing shortages and a poor work/life balance – but one loyal customer Matt Buskard came to the rescue to keep it the same. And we rejoiced. So when I saw this note on the Fly Trap FB page over the weekend, I got a little nervous.
Don’t Worry – It’s A Good Thing Ferndale
Here’s the note from Matt about the changes (don’t worry) coming to the Fly Trap:
Hey friends–
As you know in early 2022 we took over the Fly Trap with the goal of keeping that gem of a place the same. We took it over with one driving force: to help keep what made Ferndale fun and unique still that. My love for that space, concept, and more importantly the staff- is what drove me to really want to be a part of the magic that was created.
Over the next few years the dining world has changed- and as we venture into this new territory- my focus has to be smaller and less divided. I am spreading myself so incredibly thin- and it’s letting everyone around me- friends, family, customers, community and investors, down. I’m not able to be as connected as I would like to be in any of those relationships. You always think of yourself as that entrepreneur that has the capacity to take on an incredible amount- until you realize that you too- are human and can only handle so much.
With that being said- I could not think of a better set of folks to take over the Fly Trap- probably the ONLY people I think who could do it justice… So help me in welcoming back Kara and Gavin to their amazing creation- The Fly Trap.
Thank you all for the support and trust you put into us loving this space for the last couple of years. I know folks were worried we’d change it- but why fix something that is already great? This is a tremendously bittersweet moment- but also the right decision.
To Shannon, Gigi, Carol, Meg, Alex, Jessi, Kelly, MOM, Deontae, Alvaro, and everyone else- thank you for letting me into your club. You are all some of the best folks I’ve ever worked with- and I am grateful for you all.
And specifically to Gigi- you’re one of the best people I know. Your heart, leadership, hardwork and empathy will be what makes you one of the best humans I’ve ever been lucky enough to know. I am eternally grateful for you, and I adore you dearly. Thank you for being GOLD in a world full of beige.

Restaurants are so much more than just great food. They’re a part of our community, a place to relax and enjoy the company of friends (new and old). That’s why it’s so hard when we lose the places we love…and we’re so happy about stories like the Fly Trap. We hope Matt realizes how much we appreciate what he did to keep it going.
