Dan Campbell is the real deal. Everyone here in Detroit knows it. He gets us - the passion for this team is unrivaled in the NFL (sorry Cowboys fans, we're real...deal with it). There's a time when a city truly starts to reflect the DNA of their hometown...think about it. The Steelers in the late 70's - early 80's...steel curtain, smash mouth, tough as nails (Jack Lambert...if you don't know, google it). The Cowboys with Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith - stylish, smooth and flashy like Dallas in the 1990s (think TV show).
This Detroit Lions team reflects a TON of our cities qualities back at us:
- Grit: Not only the teams mantra, but a mindset for Detroit as long as I can remember. Write off the motor city at your own peril. Detroiters don't give a sh*t what you think about our city, but say something about the Lions and we'll fight. Like this team. You really think Amon Ra St Brown is going to slack off now that he got his new deal? Hardly. He's got even more to prove.
- Passion: The Detroit Lions have become the Cubs of the NFL...the loveable losers with the entire country rooting for us (sound familiar? how many New York Times articles were written about "renaissance in Detroit"?). I could make a drinking game out of it.
