Safety First When Pumpkin Carving
This week is a big one for those who celebrate Halloween, it’s time to make the final touches to your decorations which may include some carved pumpkins. Just be aware, it’s a dangerous week for pumpkin carving.
PubMed revealed this week that 46 percent of all pumpkin carving injuries happen during this week, the week before Halloween. A study found there are about 2,000 a year in the U.S., and that’s just people who end up in the E.R. 84% of them happen in October. November is next at 11%.
I don’t think we needed an expert to tell us this but, experts say even adults should really be using those orange pumpkin-carving knives. They’re a lot safer than a real knife. For kids under 10, think about painting pumpkins instead.
Here are a few more stats to help keep you safe . . .
1. Teenagers and pre-teens are the most likely to cut themselves. 32% of injuries involve kids between 10 and 19 years old. Kids under 10 are next at 20%.
2. The last three days leading up to Halloween will see the most injuries. There’s always a spike on weekends, and the night before Halloween. So that’s this coming Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
3. Your thumb and index finger are the digits you’re most likely to cut. Around 60% of pumpkin-carving injuries involve those two digits.

Age of Trick or Treating:
We were having this debate off air on Monday morning, what age is too old to go out and get candy on Halloween? I said High School, I think that once you hit High School ages, that should be the cut off for Trick or Treating. I don’t think at that point you should be able to get candy. Also, if you don’t say Trick or Treat, you are not getting candy from me. Yes, I am that guy, if you are going out then play the game. It’s all part of it in my eyes. As someone who will have a ton of kids stopping by on Tuesday next week I will keep that promise!
