Rockers Hockey

Yesterday was a big day. It marked the first time in 15 years since I've jumped on the ice. This wasn't any old skate. This was my first and only practice with the MotorCity Rockers before I lace em' up for a game this Friday night (2/23).

Honestly, I can't tell you how much joy this skate gave me yesterday. I have been craving hockey again and since it has been so long, I wasn't sure how it would go. A little background on my hockey days. I started playing for the Kensington Valley Rebels when I was 8. I played for them for about 5 years before moving on to the Lakeland Hawks. When I got into High School I decided to concentrate more on Baseball so I started playing hockey for my High School, Walled Lake Western.

I have always said, looking back I wish I went with hockey over baseball. I really think I could have played at the next level in some compacity. Thankfully, my job now is allowing me to do some pretty cool stuff. The Rockers heard I used to play and miss the game. We talked about it, and boom they signed me to a one game celebrity contract.

This week, everything paid off! I had my first skate with the team and all things considered I think it went pretty well!

Here is a quick video of me getting into one of their drills.

WEARING NUMBER 94

Things did get a little awkward after practice though. I am going to wear number 94 for the game. Get it, 94.7..Anyway, there is one problem, a player on the team already wears number 94. We met in General Manager Nick Field's office to break the news to player Nick Gullo. Nick was not happy about it, but understands what it takes to be the ultimate team player. Here is a look at how that meeting went down.

Here are a few more videos from my practice with the Rockers.

I really want to say thank you to Nick and all the players in the Rockers locker room. Without them agreeing to this, I wouldn't be able to. I can't wait to lace em' up come Friday night and help the boys get a win! There are still some limited tickets for the game. If you want to join us, check out the discounted ticket link below:

Hey It’s Ryan, let me start off by saying…YES, I was born and raised in Wixom, Michigan although a lot of listeners like to joke that I am from Arizona. WCSX has always been my radio home, I have been at the station since I was a 23-year-old intern, co-host of Big Jim’s House, married with kids. Family and radio are what I love, but don’t get me started on golf! Like some, I have become obsessed with golf and you can hear all about that on “The Ball Washer Pod” right here on WCSX. One of my other passions is helping out the Vets. Since coming to WCSX I have been apart of raising hundreds of thousands for local vet groups. Other than that, I am a goofy guy, loving life, my family and talking to you on the radio. Ryan writes about golf, family and what happens on “Big Jim’s House.”
