Weird Things In Movies – Bloodsport Edition
The actor and martial artist celebrates his birthday on October 18. He moved to America from Belgium in 1982 to pursue the career. He got his first big break as the lead in the martial arts film 'Bloodsport.' From the late 80s to the late 90s, Van Damme starred in globally popular action films.
I noticed a weird scene in Bloodsport involving the doctor (don’t roll your eyes…lol).
Big Jim Loves Those Weird Movies
Please tell me I’m not the only one who picks out weird little things in movies and remembers them. Right? For example, I loved how, in the film “Armageddon,” kids had models of a super secret space shuttle within 24 hours of it being announced to the world (I always wanted to meet those marketing folks).
My new passion is the 1985 classic “Bloodsport” with Jean Claude Van Damme (you just rolled your eyes, didn’t you?). I was homesick just skimming through movies when it came on – and we were instantly transported to a world of lousy acting, martial arts, and Forrest Whittaker (that’s right…he was one of the agents looking for Frank Dux…Jean Claude Van Damme).
I noticed a weird scene in Bloodsport.
So, what scene did I zero in on? The pretty blonde reporter trying to prove the Kumate exists secretly – then taking out her cassette recorder in the MIDDLE OF THE STANDS and whispering into it? Or is Chong Li hiding a powder pill in his shorts, and nobody notices that he took it out to throw in Frank’s eyes?
Nope. It’s a scene after Ray Jackson (remember Ogre in “Revenge of the Nerds”?) got his butt kicked by Chong Li and winds up in the hospital. You can’t help but notice the doctor using his stethoscope to listen to his heart, lungs, shoulder, arm, and… um. Everywhere. Just watch.
If you told me this was a scene from “Airplane” or “Police Squad,” I would’ve believed you. But it’s just a doctor in “Bloodsport” doing his thing – I sincerely doubt there is a “second take” in this movie (and I love it).
Yep. These are the random things I notice in movies. Enjoy. (Next time, I’ll have to analyze Steven Seagal’s bar room fight in “Out For Justice.”)
Of course, if you need more 80’s movie greatness – I can help:

It seems easy enough, right? Five days in Cancun with live music from folks like Bret Michaels, Ace Frehley, The Fixx, etc. – drinks flowing, dancing, laughing and tearing it up.
But are you ready for it? Seriously. This isn’t karaoke night with a couple of beers (I can speak to that from experience). You need inspiration, motivation, and role models to guide you. That’s why I’ve prepared my FIVE 80’s movies to get you “party ready”. So grab a seat, pop some popcorn and get ready to rock.
Movies that DIDN’T make the list
Top Five Party Movies From the 1980’s isn’t something we take lightly. Oh wait. It is. But when you start thinking about all the party movies in the 80’s and how to narrow it down to five…some get cut out:
- Weekend At Bernies: This one was right on the cusp of making the list. Is it a good movie? nope. Horrible at times (but we don’t care). The party mindset of the film isn’t lost on us though. Two young men making the most of it with a dead body in tow. The boat scenes are still the best.
- Risky Business: Is it a party movie? There’s obviously some pivotal scenes involving a party at the house…but is it a real party movie? I’m conflicted with this one. Motivating young men to step out of their comfort zone.
- Footloose: Don’t laugh – this movie revolves around a school dance (form of party, right?). The young out of towner teaching these simple folks that it’s okay to party. It totally works…just not top five in my mind.
