Duran Sabbath mashup
Well this is another mashup that shouldn’t work – but it did. Duran Duran plus Black Sabbath. Do we call it Duran Sabbath mashup?
Here’s the video (posted by Duran Duran) – Duran Sabbath Mashup
Duran Sabbath with a mashup they call “Rionoid” – this is awesome (and weird)
We love a good Mashup
Okay, I’ll admit it – we love good mashup (Bill McClintock is the master of the art…science?) Remember the Van Halen/Motown mashup from earlier this year?
The History of Mashups
So what was the first musical mashup? I was thinking about Dr. Demento and all his great songs back in the day. Spike Jonze was just wacky stuff, right? But if you go to the first mashup (in my opinion) it has to be Mr. Jaws by Dickie Goodman back in 1975. Please don’t tell me I’m the only one who remembers this song….right?
I seem to remember radio stations doing mashups after that – but none of them caught quite like the mashup of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” with scenes from “Titanic” – remember it being everywhere? Then there was Springsteen and “Secret Garden” with snippets from “Jerry Maguire”.
From there we got into mixing and musical mashups – and I’ll admit, we played some that we’re very good…but with editing technology today it’s become easier for producers to get really creative and shape some of these mashups. That’s what jumps out about songs like this Duran Duran / Black Sabbath mashup – it’s so well produced that even the band acknowledged it.
What are your favorites Big Jim?
I’m glad you asked…here’s a couple to consider when it comes to Mashups:
- James Hetfield and the News – “Hip to Be the Sandman” (click here to check out the video)
- The K. Geils Band – “Freeze Frame City” (click here to check out the video)
